How Far in Advance to Book Your Galápagos Islands Tour
How far in advance you should book your Galápagos Island tour depends on the answer to three questions.
1) When do you want to go?
2) How many people are you traveling with?
3) How particular are you about the cruise or island hopping tour you want to do?
If you want to go during high season, over the Christmas break and during our summer months of June, July, and August, you’ll need to book well in advance. Likewise, you’ll need to book well in advance if you are traveling with a large group of people.
And, if you want a specific cruise or a particular island hopping tour, you should book well in advance as well to reserve the limited space available.
For example, let’s say you would like to book a Christmas holiday with your family of 8, including grandma, grandpa, and the kids. And, you want to book a specific island-hopping adventure. To make sure you get the date, space, and adventure you want, I’d recommend booking at least a year in advance.
In contrast, if you are a single person, who would be happy getting space on any 7-day cruise that departs the week of April 6, you can wait till the last minute to book.
Beware, though, that if you wait till the last minute, you may not have the experience you dreamed about. On one hand, a friend of mine managed to snag a great deal on a cruise by waiting until she arrived in Ecuador. The cruise proved to be a winner. On the other, I booked a cruise 6 weeks in advance. The only boat that had available space at a reasonable price was not great. The cabin smelled moldy. The food was adequate. And, the boat was small, which contributed to the rocking and rolling that made me so seasick. (Hmmm…maybe that’s why I didn’t enjoy the food so much!)
Better to research what you want to do and then book far enough in advance that you can remember this once-in-a-lifetime trip for all the right reasons.
