Spend New Year’s Day at Machu Picchu
Looking for an unforgettable way to ring in the New Year? Join us on a special trek with llamas through the Lares Valley and celebrate New Year’s Day in Machu Picchu. Llama Expeditions is giving a $200 per person discount to the first eight people who sign up for the trip by November 25, 2012.
During this special trek, you will hike with llamas through remote rural communities in the Peruvian Andes. The trek opens a window into the daily lives of Peruvians who still live in much the same was as their ancestors did.
The trek ends in the old Inca village of Ollantaytambo on New Year’s Eve. Here you will celebrate the New Year with a traditional dinner of cuy (guinea pig), trout ceviche, lechon (suckling pig) and vegetables or with a vegetarian option of Rocoto Relleno (stuffed peppers).
There will also be a special ceremony with a local shaman to make traditional offerings to the New Year. In the Andes, all life is perceived as one grand, infinite ceremony. Because physical survival is so hard in the high mountains, life is experienced as a true gift, not a problem to be solved. The Pago a la Tierra (Payment to the Earth) ceremony involves the Andean practice of making offerings to the mountains (apus), Mother Earth (Pachamama), and other spirits of nature in reciprocity, reverence, and thanksgiving.
The next morning you will board an early train to kick off the New Year with a tour of Machu Picchu.
The trip begins on December 25 with your arrival in Lima and ends on January 2 when you return to Lima for a tour of this City of Kings before departing for home.
The trip also includes a visit to Kausay Wasi Clinic in Coya in the Sacred Valley. The clinic caters to the Quechua people living in the Andes. Doctors speak Quechua and the clinic offers a wide range of services from surgery to dentistry. You will have the opportunity to join Llama Expeditions in making a donation of badly needed medical supplies to support the clinic’s work.
